words materialize into active symbols
abstracts, mapping unsuspected worlds

HENRY VIII (1509 - 1547)

Henry eight - wives six.
(Seems to chop them up like sticks)
Daughters two - sons one.
(No grand-children. Tudors gone)
Henry ate - Monks nil.
(All that eating made him ill)
Thomas More - Henry no more
(Death just evened up the score)
.......

relaxing myself in the grip of a storm
flying along the crest of a tidal wave

As / Is

I started contributing texts to a weblog called As/Is. In previous post on Streets of Amsterdam I occasionally used poems originally posted on As/Is. Nice pieces of text, giving a meaning to my images. Now I am allowed to contribute to this outstanding blog.

Accessible art

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. At times art is incomprehensible. Sometimes art is inviting, like this statue, on a beautiful day.

A retrospective. Private Pleasures, Burdensome Boredom, Public Decay - Boris Mikhailov

Boris Mikhailov, click to enlarge Great day in Amsterdam, I was in perfect company. We visited FOAM_Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam. The work of the Ukranian Boris Mihhailow covering the period 1970 - late 1990's is outstanding. Simultaneous was an expostion of Photieman - Tom Wood. Street-photography comme la lettre. An insight in the lives of the 'common people' of Liverpool. Tom Wood, click to enlarge

Occasionally I visit the real world.

You look into a pair of eyes that are looking into yours

A voice reveals a habitat, distinct, yet startling familiar

Semi-permeable shields, allowing affable touch

This real world

No shit about perception, distorted by a lateralized brain

Is concrete, here and now

So why does my mind go virtual

And visits

The real world of the other day

For a rosette, Voor een roosje

Art or pornography? Rombout Oomen created this wallpainting, inspired by the poem "Aan een roosje" written by Jacob van Lennep (1802 - 1868). After a protest action by local people Oomen covered an area of the woman with a block pattern. To my opinion it made her even more sexy:).

Aan een roosje

Zachtgekleurde lentebloesem,
Die Selindes borstjes kust,
Die zo mollig op haar boezem
Tussen donzen peulen rust!
Aartig roosje, vers ontloken,
Ware uw zalig lot het mijn’,
Lag ik ook zo neergedoken
Tussen 't dubbel halssatijn,
'k Lei geenszins als gij bewustloos
't Hangend hoofdje stil op zij;
Nee,'k bekeek, nieuwsgierig, rustloos,
Heel de omtrek van nabij.
'k Zou, door hete zucht gedreven,
Aan die borsten, blank en mals,
Duizend, duizend kusjens geven,
'k Zoende schouders, nek en hals.
'k Zoude ook samen vergelijken
Die twee bollen, wit en rond:
Zien, of deez' voor die moest wijken,
Of er onderscheid bestond,
Wie met blauwer aders praaIde,
Wie de blankste tint bezat,
Wie de meeste veerkracht haalde
Wie de roodste bezie had.
'k Zou dan trachten op te sporen
Waar de holle weg ons leidt
Die gelijk een diepe voren
De ene bol van d'andre scheidt,
Die stilzwijgend schijnt te wenken,
Lager vindt ge rijker schat
Dan gij immer uit kost denken.
Dan een sterv'ling ooit bezat.
'k Nam dat pad, van lust doorprikkeld
Tot die schat mijne ogen trof
En 't geheim mij werd ontwikkeld
Binnen Cypris' rozenhof.

Jacob van Lennep

If you have (or are willing to make) an english translation of the poem, please let me know.

Amsterdam Airport, the law of Leela

In Indian tradition, the creation of the world is a form of divine play - The law of Leela -. Likewise, our entire existence in the world is mired in illusion. Just as a play begins and ends, so does life. What matters most is how we "act"

Alone in a crowd

About 2000 people on a square, dancing on urban-house music. All of a sudden this person was probing through, a bycicle in his hands, seamingly unaware of the party going on. Alone with his thoughts. Alone in the crowd.

Yesterday I had a long discussion whether I should publish this photo or not. Initially I said no. Why did I change my mind? Because this is Amsterdam too.

Some are made from a nice perspective others only show the atmosphere.

Anyway, lots of booze, large crowds, loud music and very much fun!!

Queensday in Amsterdam

Yesterday, april 30, queensday in Amsterdam. A crowded city, people dancing in the streets, music everywhere. I was there, anonymous, going with the flow. Listened to the house and urban dance mucic. Watched a fabulous jazz quintet for an hour. Made photographs too. :) This photo is at the Leidseplein, most streets in the innercity were crowded like this. Perhaps I'll show more photo's here. Once I've sorted them out:)
